Academic
Dr Simon Fokt holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of St Andrews, Scotland, and currently lectures at HTW Berlin. His academic work focuses on aesthetics, applied ethics, and metaphilosophy. His focus on taking complex philosophical concepts out of the academic discourse and into the world lead him to teach medical ethics to doctors and nurses, data ethics to data scientists and IT professionals, and adapt Aristotle’s virtue ethical concepts to modern masculinity.
Activist
As a member of the steering committee of MenEngage Europe, Dr Fokt works to improve debates around men and masculinities through helping to inform policy and the work of hundreds of NGOs around the world. He leads the working group on Positive Engagement, focused on identifying and developing ways to approach and inspire men through positive narratives.
Educator
Dr Fokt taught and designed a number of classes and online courses focused on ethics, epistemology, and specific philosophical concepts such as intellectual humility or self-knowledge.
Diversifier
In 2015, Dr Fokt launched the Diversity Reading List – an online resource which promotes equality and diversity in universities teaching. The project won multiple grants from prestigious associations, universities and journals, and continues to thrive under his management.
Musician
A classically trained double bass player, Dr Fokt played in numerous bands and orchestras and owns a unique DSDV3 electric upright bass. His love of both acoustic and electronic music led him to develop experimental musical projects focused on exploring their intersection.
Traveller
Nothing forces one to challenge one’s preconceptions as seeing how differently other people live their lives. A devout traveller, Dr Fokt explored cities, mountains, jungles and deserts on six continents, backpacking and connecting with people everywhere he goes.
